Faculty Position in Geotechnical Engineering

 

FACULTY POSITION:  The University of Akron invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the area of geotechnical engineering commencing Spring 2004.  Applicants should have a doctorate in civil engineering from a nationally/internationally recognized geotechnical engineering graduate program, with expertise in one or more of the following: geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, foundation engineering, numerical and/or experimental methods in geotech, constitutive modeling and probabilistic analysis in geomechanics, and advanced sensors and non-destructive evaluation in geostructures.  The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate (including laboratories) and graduate courses, supervise master and doctoral students, and establish a viable research program accompanied by scholarly publications and external funding.  Candidates with teaching and/or practical experience are preferred.  All applicants should submit a resume, name and addresses of three references, and a letter of application, which describes the applicant’s expertise, strength, research interests and professional objectives. 

 

The department includes 13 full time faculty members. It offers BS, MS, and Ph.D degrees in Civil Engineering areas spanning Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Mechanics, Environmental Engineering and Transportation. The University of Akron is a state-assisted metropolitan university in northeast Ohio with approximately 23,000 students. The University has recently initiated ambitious plan of modernizing its physical campus to satisfy the demands of the incoming student body, and has also embarked on a program of enhancing its research level and activities commensurate with the level required for Doctoral Extensive Carnegie status while recently being recognized by the Carnegie Academy and the America Association for Higher Education (AAHE) as a co-leader for one of Carnegie’s Cluster in the teaching and learning arena.
