Cooperative Education (Co-op) provides valuable career experience for engineering students. Participating in Co-op allows you to experience
first-hand what a career in engineering is all about by alternating paid work and school every other semester upon completing the sophomore year
of courses. The Co-op plan is an essential part of total engineering aptitude. While academics measure a student's reasoning power, capacity for
thinking through a problem and his/her total intellectual qualification, relevant work experience measures his/her ability to find the fit and to
adjust to work and life as they are found in industry. A Co-op typically earns the range of $10.00 - $21.00 an hour each work period, depending
on the branch of engineering and the geographic location.
The Cooperative Education Program was initiated at The University of Akron in 1914 and has established an Engineering Co-op relationship with over
1500 companies in 20 different states. In Spring 2002, Summer 2002, and / or Fall 2002, Civil Engineering students had co-op
placement with the following employers:
