Dr. Binienda's Message
It is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of our entire faculty to the Department
of Civil Engineering at The University of Akron. This site contains
information
on students, faculty, research, and facilities in the department. It is my
privilege to introduce you to our department.
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1914 and is
currently
one
of the most productive and successful departments in the College of Engineering.
We are committed to continuing a heritage of educating leaders in engineering
and to moving to the next level of excellence consistent with the goals of the
University. Our success is demonstrated by the talented faculty attracted from
the top national programs. The undergraduate course content is constantly under
review by our faculty with consultation by the Industrial and Advisory Council
groups. Our graduates are in demand by industry, due to both the specific engineering
and generic skills obtained from our courses. Our alumni and civil engineering
professional community at large significantly support this department through
fund raising for scholarships and active student mentoring in the classrooms.
The faculty commitment is realized in teaching through a rigorous and comprehensive
curriculum, including practical laboratory courses and a capstone senior design
experience. The Department of Civil Engineering offers an ABET-accredited
136
credit hour bachelor of science in civil engineering degree. Our undergraduate
students
are encouraged to opt for the cooperative education program, which provides practical
professional experience. Significant financial support from the civil engineering
community translates to numerous scholarships available to new and existing students
alike. Please visit our scholarship page for more details.
At the graduate level, we offer a master of science in civil engineering degree
and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in engineering. Our civil engineering program
has a long history of educating outstanding engineers, researchers, and educators.
Graduates of our program have participated in developing infrastructure of many
great cities and small townships, developing new structural materials and applications,
and working on a wide variety of environmental issues to improve quality of life.
The accomplishments of our graduates have been exemplary, and it is our job to
continue to shape the future of civil engineering with cutting-edge research
and new advances in student learning.
The University of Akron Transportation Institute and ASCE Student Chapter have
grown
into active student-run organizations that strive to promote the professional
development of civil engineering students through curriculum-enriching activities,
presentations, and projects. Every year the Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams
successfully compete with other schools on the regional and national arenas.
They host student and parent chapters of ASCE meetings, inviting guest speakers
and raising funds. Junior and senior ASCE student members actively help freshmen
and sophomore students by tutoring in various subjects, helping in project preparation
and presentation, or in selection of a co-op opportunity by an experience information
exchange during informal pizza parties.
Please check out our website for additional details on the school, application materials, and other information of interest.
